The Texas Center for Obesity Surgery will partner with you in determining if bariatric surgery is right for you. If you qualify, bariatric surgery (also referred to as weight loss surgery) can be a life changing and even lifesaving option when diet and exercise have not resulted in sufficient weight loss.
All weight loss surgeries may carry some degree of risk, therefore it is not for everyone. However, bariatric surgery is considered extremely safe but, as with any surgery when an individual meets specific criteria in order to be considered a candidate.

DR. MICHEL K. STEPHAN, MD, FACS
Dr. Stephan is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery (ABS), a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) in Mesquite and Dallas area. He is a pioneer in the field of General and Bariatric surgery. He performs all General Surgery cases and specializes in laparoscopic gastric bypass, vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), all complex procedures requiring specialized training and experience in bariatric surgery. He has the experience and advanced training needed to offer a safe and effective surgical weight loss program. He works with a team of highly skilled physicians, surgeons and nurses, expert psychologists, therapists and dietitians, and a staff that will work with insurance companies to help patients maximize coverage of expenses.
SERVICES
SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY
Sleeve gastrectomy is a laparoscopic surgical procedure removing approximately 75 percent of the stomach. This results in the stomach taking on the shape of a tube or "sleeve" which holds much less food.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I QUALIFY FOR WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY?
General qualifications for weight loss surgery:
You are around 100 pounds over the ideal weight when using life insurance height/weight charts
Body Mass Index of 40 or greater
Body Mass Index of 35-39.9 with one or more life threatening co-morbidity conditions
Previous attempts at weight loss have failed or success has been short-term
For 5 or more years, you have been overweight
No additional diseases potentially causing you to be overweight
You are willing and prepared to make lifestyle and eating habit changes
You are committed to ongoing lifetime follow-up care
18+ years old
WHAT IS YOUR NEW PATIENT PROCEDURE?
If you plan to utilize your insurance, you'll complete the bariatric paperwork regarding your health prior to consultation. After an in-person consultation at our office, our team will recommend the procedure to your insurance company if you're a qualifying candidate.
We accept the patients co-pay on most insurance plans.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS AFTER THE OPERATION?
You'll comes in seven days post-operation for for an exam and staple removal. You'll also discuss the progression of your diet with Dr. Stephan and come back for follow up appointments at the three and six month post operation marks.
